The state of Karnataka has a glorious history. It has given birth to many saints, mystics, spiritualists and social reformers. The 12th century Karnataka witnessed the birth of sublime humanist Sri Basaveshwara. The sharanas of 12th century led by Basaveshwar launched the new religion and social revolution doing away with all inhuman practices. They converted the degraded society into a new society of social enlightenment, based on the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Basaveshwar in a way was more modern than many modern thinkers, insisting rationality as a valuable aid to the human life. The revolution of this sort was never witnessed in any part of the world for the establishment of society based on equality.
The unfînished task of Sri Basaveshwar and the sharanas was further continued by Shree Tontada Siddhalirtga Shivayogi of Yedayur in 16th century. He was a great saint, mystic, who travelled the whole of india with his 701 Viraktas for the propagation of Basava's preachïngs. He was called second Basaveshwar and second Allama. He was the founder of Shri Jagadguru Tontadarya Samsthanamath, Dambal-Gadag. This Math has made a significant contribution for social and education development in this part of Karnataka by donating valuable land, money, building etc, during pre-independence and post independence of India. The present pontiff of this great math His HolinesS Dr. Tontada Siddhalinga Mahaswamiji is the 19th in the line of succession starting from Shri Yedeyur Siddhalingeshwar.
Swamiji is the recipient of many prestigious awards by the state and central govt. for his note worthy service for the cause of humanity. Accordingly the Govt. of India has bestowed upon hilTi the Communal Harmony and National Integration award 2001 at Rastrapathi Bhavan. The Govt. of Karnataka gave Rajyotsava Award for his service to society. The Govt. of Karnataka has given the national award “Basava Rastriya Puraskara" with 10 lakhs rupees. Gulburga University has given him the Honorary Doctorate for the spread of education in rural backward areas. The Govt. of Karnataka has awarded a prize for publishing kannada literature in an impressive way on a large scale.
Swamiji has setup Dasoha (Free feeding) at different places in Karnataka including Yedeyur, keggere (Kunigal Taluka), Gadag, Dambal, Haveri etc. For feeding free food to the people irrespective of caste and creed.
The Establishment of Jagadguru Tontadarya Vidyapeeth at Gadag in 1976 is the important mile stone in the field of education and through this he has touched the rural masses providing education to the poor, down trodden, and neglected people. Accordingly, this vidyapeetha has setup more than 100 educational institutions right from LKG to post graduation. S. M English Medium School at Chikkabanavar is a new addition to the list of educational institutions managed by the Vidyapeeth.

Bangalore, the hub of educational institutions has become an internationally known seat of higher education in all disciplines of knowledge and software engineering. J.T.
